Two new frontier models, one of them much cheaper, and a serverless alternative to Kafka for event-driven architectures.

Google announces Gemini 4 Argon, with a 1 million token context and a phased release
Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, its new frontier model, aimed at long, complex professional tasks in software engineering, knowledge work in areas such as legal and finance, and cyber defense, with a 1 million token limit. For now, the model is rolling out only to selected security defenders through the Fairwind program. Google says it will widen access gradually, with testing and safeguards, before opening it to developers, enterprises and consumers.
The next generation of models promises more autonomy in professional tasks, but it arrives gradually. Companies can prepare data, processes and evaluations now to benefit when access widens.

GPT-6.1 Sol gets close to GPT-6 Astra at a fifth of the price
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work at a fifth of the price: $2 per million input tokens and $10 output. Cached input costs $0.10 per million, 95% less than standard input. On DeepSWE v1.1, which evaluates engineering tasks in real codebases, it matches Astra at about a fifth of the cost.
Agents that reuse context across calls, such as coding and customer service assistants, become much cheaper to run. Review prompt caching in current applications to benefit from the discount.

Cloudflare K2 brings durable, serverless event streams on top of R2
Cloudflare put K2 in public beta, an event streaming service that stores messages as an ordered, durable log on R2 storage. It decouples producers from consumers: if consumers go down or cannot keep up, nothing is lost, and several systems can read the same events at their own pace. The company built K2 because it could not run Kafka on its network spread across more than 335 cities.
Event-driven architectures, such as an e-commerce backend feeding analytics and fraud detection at once, become simpler to run without maintaining a Kafka cluster. It is an alternative for those already on Cloudflare's platform.
