A big move in the data market, more precise voice transcription for applications and a real case of modernizing a system over 20 years old.

DuckLabs, the team behind DuckDB, joins AWS and keeps the projects open
DuckLabs announced it will join AWS on September 1, with the team staying in Amsterdam and working on DuckDB, DuckLake and Quack. DuckDB and the other components remain open source under the MIT license, stewarded by the nonprofit DuckDB Foundation. According to the company, DuckDB gets more than 1 million downloads a day, and the founders worried the small company would become a bottleneck for the project's growth.
DuckDB gains the backing of a large cloud, which should bring it closer to AWS data services without closing the code. For those using or evaluating DuckDB, the move strengthens the long-term safety of the choice.

Gemini 3.5 Transcribe transcribes audio in real time with speaker attribution
Google launched Gemini 3.5 Transcribe, its most precise speech-to-text model, which handles noise, jargon and disfluencies and outputs formatted text. There are two APIs: real-time streaming with sub-second latency, for interactive voice apps, and processing of recordings, such as meetings and calls, with speaker attribution and word-level timestamps. The model also recognizes custom vocabulary.
Voice agents, live captions and call analytics become more accurate and easier to build. Companies with contact centers can turn recordings into structured data to improve processes.

EVE Online starts migrating over 20 years of code from Python 2 to Python 3
Fenris Creations, which develops EVE Online, began moving the game from Python 2.7, unsupported since 2020, to Python 3. EVE has run on Python since 2003 and had not changed versions since 2010. The company explains that staying on Python 2 started holding the project back, because modern libraries, debuggers and profilers are built for Python 3 and recent versions brought big performance gains, and the goal is for the migration to be unnoticeable to players.
The case shows how old, stable systems end up accumulating cost by staying on unsupported technology. Migrating gradually, testing in a separate environment and focusing on not affecting users is the safest path.
