More capable AI across Apple's ecosystem, a native Linux environment for developing on the Mac and more runway for scaling PostgreSQL.

Apple rebuilds Apple Intelligence on models developed with Google
According to MacRumors, Apple announced an overhaul of Apple Intelligence built on Apple Foundation Models developed with Google, using the technologies behind the Gemini family, running on device and in Apple's private cloud. The models bring image understanding and generation, advanced photo editing and visual question answering. A new system orchestrator tailors responses to the open app and the user's task.
With system AI understanding each app's context, it matters more for apps to integrate well with it. Companies with iOS apps can plan how their features will show up to Siri and the orchestrator.

Apple's container project adds container machines, Linux environments integrated with the Mac
Apple's container project gained container machines: light, persistent Linux environments built from standard OCI images that mount the macOS home folder at the same path and with the same user. Unlike a regular container, they run the image's init system, so you can register services and test the application under a process supervisor. The documentation warns that they give up much of the isolation and should only use trusted images.
Developers on the Mac get an environment close to production Linux servers without heavy virtual machines. This narrows the gap between local and production environments.

PgDog raises $5.5M and already serves more than 2 million queries per second
PgDog, an open source proxy that makes PostgreSQL horizontally scalable, announced $5.5 million from investors such as Basis Set and Y Combinator. According to the team, it already serves more than 2 million queries per second across dozens of production deployments, has sharded over 20 TB and passed 1.4 million Docker image pulls. The company is preparing an Enterprise edition with SLA-backed support to make it easier to run on AWS.
Scaling PostgreSQL without changing databases or rewriting the application becomes more practical, with a tool that now has a company and support behind it. It is an alternative to costly migrations when the database starts to limit growth.
